2013 Northern New York Maple Schools Set

To help northern New York meet the growing worldwide demand for maple syrup and other maple products, the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) associations of northern New York are offering four concentrated education opportunities for anyone interested in learning maple sugaring as a hobby or a business. Host sites are the American Maple Museum in Croghan, Gouverneur High School, and Brushton-Moira Central School in Brushton. Admission ranges from $5 to $30, depending on the location.
 
The Northern New York Maple Schools offer a host of experts offering presentations and hands-on learning opportunities. Topics include maple production, pricing, business development, and forest management. Workshops on walnut and birch syrup production and growing mushrooms are part of the maple school in Croghan on Saturday, January 19. Using GPS in your woodlot and Maple Royalty are among topics at the event in Gouverneur on Saturday, January 26.
 
The first-ever Maple School in Franklin County includes a maple equipment auction after the workshops on Saturday, February 2 at 4 p.m.

Friday, January 18, 2013
Beginner Maple School, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., American Maple Museum, Croghan
Developed for small and beginning producers, but all are welcome; support provided by Lewis County Maple Producers Association.

Winter Maple School, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., American Maple Museum, Croghan
Presenters: NYS Maple Extension Specialist Stephen Childs, Northern NY Maple Specialist Michael Farrell, CCE Oswego County Agriculture Program Leader JJ Schell, NYS Extension Forester and Arnot Teaching & Research Forest Director Peter J. Smallidge, Foy Agency insurance agent Roxaina Hurlburt, and NYS Agriculture and Markets representatives. Workshops on food safety, labeling, grading, vacuum systems, forest management, granulated maple sugar, planning a maple business, pricing, marketing, walnut and birch syrup production, growing mushrooms. Support provided by Lewis County Maple Producers Association.
Cost: preregistration $15 per person for four workshops with lunch; walk-ins $20; register with payment by January 15, 2013

For beginners to experienced producers, hands-on classes and workshops, children's and family activities, door prizes for youth. Topics: Backyard/Beginner Sugar Making, Value-Added Maple Products, Woodlot Management, GPS and Your Woodlot, Marketing Your Maple Products, Pricing Your Maple Products, Find Out About Maple Royalty. Hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, St. Lawrence Maple Producers, and Gouverneur FFA.
Cost: $15 per adult, $5 per youth (ages 5-21), includes lunch

1st Annual Franklin County Maple Producers School and Trade Show, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Brushton-Moira Central School, Brushton
Registration opens at 7:15 a.m.; Cornell University, CCE and maple industry specialists teach on syrup production, equipment, maple tubing, sugarbush thinning, filtering, canning, making value-added maple confections, buying and selling, licensing, tax assessment, stainless steel welding, wholesaling, direct marketing. Co-sponsored by new Franklin County Maple Association, CCE Franklin County, and Brushton-Moira Central School FFA.
Cost: preregistration $20 per person; $30 at door
